I had a long talk with the kitten.

I explained to her the concepts of context and stereotypes.

I told her, patiently, that our actions do not reflect solely upon ourselves, but upon our communities as a whole.

I even brought up some helpful illustrations, via Google Image Search, to show her what negative cliches she was reinforcing.

I'm afraid it all fell upon deaf ears.  To my dismay:

She is a stripey orange cat who will do anything to get at my lasagna. *sigh*

How can we move beyond the hurtful labels if we only live down to them, kitten?  Please try to be more image-conscious in the future.

Awwww ^_^

These posts are bittersweet for me - my own cat (Missy) just passed away, so on the one hand, kitten makes me miss my kitten... but on the other hand, everything is better with pictures of kittens. They're one of the sufficient conditions for the Joy Muon to appear (can't get your mu on without kittens, right?).

Give her a snuggle for me? If it seems appropriate, you can also tell her I'm sorry about the terrible pun above.

Oh dear oh dear... another one falls prey to media re-enforced stereotypes.

You'll just have to make sure she gets plenty of exercise, to avoid falling into the body image trap. I'm sure you can manage to play with her for an hour or so each day.

It takes time and maturity to go beyond the stereotypes. A kitten has to learn and grow and realize she can be herself and not someone's 2-dimensional image of her.

Be patient. ;-)

If you're going to keep that cat around, you'd better have a vet check it out, make sure it doesn't have any nasty bugs for your other cats!
