Which is correct: Trekkie or Trekker?

If the individuals in question have a sense of humour about themselves, realize that they're proud members of a culture of adults who've held onto the childhood joy of playing astronauts, and know not to take anything to do with fandom too seriously... then you call them Trekkies.

If, on the other hand, they have absolutely no sense of humour about themselves, feel that Star Trek is sacrosanct and is less a culture and more a rigid set of rules and facts which must be adhered to religiously, and think that fandom is serious business... you call them Trekkies and laugh.

The people who take such a thing seriously are fanboys. Such people are best avoided, in general.

"Trekkie" was originally a derogatory word for female Trek fans ("you're just Trek groupies, not real fans"). So, really, sometimes the people who care are fans from the 70s who want their fannishness to be just as legit as the hardcore scifi fan's. :)

I'll be in the "humorless feminist fucking up a good fandom joke" corner over here. :)

I did not know that! Thanks for the education. I still stand by my convictions, of course. Descriptivist theory of linguistics, meanings have shifted, etc etc. Nobody ever likes my theories on offensive labels so I'll just leave it at that. :)

I actually think your joke captures the current spirit of trekkie/trekker really well, but I think the gender disparity in fandom is so interesting and rarely discussed. It's amazing how a hobby that is so female-dominated still so frequently marginalizes women or devalues their contributions. So, I just wanted to note that, at least in the 70s, the "I'm a Trekker not a Trekkie" distinction had gender political implications. :)

(I totally responded again just to break out another ST icon)
