Rather than a big biographical spiel (bi poly pagan(ish) Minnesotan geek living in Amarillo, Texas) like I had when I first created this journal eight years ago, or a semi-pretentious treatise like when I updated it four years ago, I'm just going to throw in semi-important quotes that linger in my head and say a bit about what they mean to me. Maybe I'll change or update it later. Dunno.

'We are all the children of children and we live as we have been shown.'
-Waponi Chief, Joe Versus the Volcano

I don't quote this as an absolution of myself, as though suggesting that others are to blame for troubles in my life. Rather, it is a reminder to myself that nobody has better answers, or higher authority. This world is a test, and nobody in it has the answer key. We find our own answers, even if we find them together.

'Endeavor to persevere.'
-Chief Dan George, The Outlaw Josey Wales

'Just keep swimming! Just keep swimming! Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming...'
-Dory the blue tang, explaining what one must do when life gets one down, Finding Nemo

Try to keep on trying. Keep on keeping on. It's a testament to the pains of this world that 'don't give up' is a necessary personal motto. Obviously, it doesn't exclusively apply to life as a whole, but also to the challenges therein. That inspiration/perspiration ratio someone trotted forth is all well and good for invention, but I think just getting by in life requires at least as much determination as either.

'It matters not how strait the gate, how charged with punishments the scroll. I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.'
-William Ernest Henley, "Invictus"

'I am not a sailor. I am a captain.'
-Los Lobos, "La Bamba"

Life's too short to be a passive passenger. One must be one's own master, a captain of one's own soul. Even if one's path in life is to wash dishes or sell shoes, with a dozen bosses and demanding customers, one must still be one's own final authority. Live as you do because you choose to. Do not be a sailor, carried across the world because you lack the courage to take the helm. Be a captain.

I'm not saying that I am a captain, but I hold the ideal dearly. I strive for it. I've been a captain before, and I will be again. It's just a matter of getting my sea legs. :)
